2010 Awards of Excellence

2010 ARCHIBUS Awards of Excellence

The ARCHBUS, Inc. Awards of Excellence Program was instituted in 1998 to honor facility professionals, Business Partners, users' groups, and other organizations for their exceptional achievements in FM automation.

IWMS and TIFM Business Alliance Award

To the organizations that, together with ARCHIBUS, are creating tools and systems that enable the most effective and efficient Business Practices.  These international companies are having a global influence on the healthy growth of the FM automation industry.

  • CGI and Talisen Technologies
With CGI supporting the overall ERP effort, Talisen has transformed the way the City of Cleveland manages and bills owners for maintenance on the surge of vacant properties that resulted from the recession. GCI and Talisen have brought the city’s operations in that regard from "B.C." to "Flash Gordon” with the right mix of technology, expertise and patience. They replaced Cleveland’s manual administration process for identifying and maintaining foreclosed, abandoned, or otherwise neglected properties and turned it into an automated delight.  Billing procedures that took 6-8 months have been shortened to 2 - 4 weeks. Talisen, furthermore, took the City's vision of doing multiple work orders on one screen and made it a reality.  Now field staff can create literally hundreds of work orders in minutes.  The GUI for the project resembles the forms the field staff was used to seeing, thus making adaptation easy for the amateur user.  Field staff has gone from paper inspection logs to tablet PCs, and converted sometimes uncoordinated completion of paper work orders and invoices to a seamless service/invoice process.  Not only has the system accelerated inspection and billing processes, but it has also been a transformative business achievement by management.

Application Excellence Award

This award is being presented to the organizations that have demonstrated a unique, innovative application of the ARCHIBUS software to their company's own needs and overall structure.  All of these organizations can be viewed as explorers and visionaries who, early on, had the courage to "push the envelope" and "see outside of the box."  None of them are new to the challenges and rewards of TIFM.

  • City of Cleveland: John Laird
John has responsibility within the Department of Parks, Recreation and Properties (PRP) for inspecting and abating property nuisances in the City of Cleveland, as outlined in Section 209 of the City of Cleveland Codified Ordinances.  In the past, field staff drove their routes within a Ward and Subsection of the City and used a series of paper forms to document the violation(s) on the property, the date and time of the inspection, the task to abate the violation and would then initial each item.  Inspection results were manually transferred to work lists and then handed to Work Crews who performed the work in order to bring the property into compliance with the ordinance.  The work may have included mowing grass and weeds, removing trash and/or debris, performing urban forestry work, removing heavy debris with loaders, removing tires, installing barriers to the property and other miscellaneous property management activities.  John’s vision has allowed this entire process to be done live in ARCHIBUS Web Central through the use of a custom interface to On Demand Work, and employing SLAs which are used on Tablet PCs with wireless cellular cards. Once the violation is noted in the field, one or multiple Work Requests are automatically generated and dispatched to the appropriate crews.
  • EniServizi: Giovanni La Bella
Giovanni La Bella is cited for his implementation of a Quality Assurance process based on ARCHIBUS integration with mobile devices to manage the oil and gas giant’s building operations and assets. As a result, EniServizi is able to gather timelier information on both service quality attained and results of controls performed. The mobile application has produced significant quality improvements and cost savings.
  • Northwestern Mutual: Nancy Filsinger, Dan Durand, Stacey Krahn, Kathy Terek, Jo Maze, Eric Doescher, Lauren Lotter
As long-time users of ARCHIBUS, Northwestern Mutual has seen the ARCHIBUS platform grow and change over the years.  During that time, their system was configured and customized to meet their specific needs of the day.  Last year, with a migration to the Web Central platform, Northwestern Mutual elected to get back to basics and ask what the system really needed to do for them.  With the primary use of the system being space and occupancy management, a solution evolved that included deployment of Web Central for Space and Moves as well as the implementation of BRG’s Web Central-based Warehouse Inventory Management System (IMS) – to manage the full lifecycle of Moves, Adds and Changes in a dynamic workplace. Now space planners can plan occupancy and move activities, interact via PDAs with the warehouse staff to investigate furniture requirements, and place and manage warehouse orders during the execution of projects. What has resulted is a more streamlined workflow that shelters users from many previous complexities of the process.
  • Unilever R&D, Global Applications
Unilever has been at the forefront of implementing ARCHIBUS Room Reservations on a large scale and has rolled out the service to its many European operations over the years. As a result, the company has streamlined the room reservation process throughout the continent, aided by the use of Web Central.
  • University of Chicago: Scott DeBlaze, Steve Tarnoki, Mary Anton
The University of Chicago has recently gone live with a full featured ARCHIBUS Space Management solution. Replacing a legacy platform in six months time?from design to ‘go-live’?the new solution encapsulates full management of over 12M SF of space for The University of Chicago and The University of Chicago Medical Center.  The configured solution incorporates ‘best practice’ workflows for space survey management within Web Central, including full support for Indirect Cost Recovery reporting related to research programs across the campus.

Distinguished User Award

This award is presented to an organization or an individual who has provided sustained leadership in its FM automation practices and implementation.

  • Caterpillar, Inc.: J. McGlasson
    J. has been a champion of ARCHIBUS at Caterpillar for the last 5 years.  He has overseen the implementation of ARCHIBUS Space, Lease and Telecom Management applications, which support Caterpillar's e911 initiative.  J. is currently working to expand the ARCHIBUS implementation to cover not only the corporate offices in East Peoria, Illinois but also Caterpillar offices throughout the entire state.  J. is also working with other groups at Caterpillar to expand the use of current and future ARCHIBUS applications. Since the implementation began, J. has worked closely with ARCHIBUS Business Partner Avatech Solutions to significantly expand the scope of the space managed, as well as the implementation of additional ARCHIBUS functionality.  When hit with budget constraints, as well as Caterpillar Security’s  need to identify the location of a 911 call over the new Voice Over IP network, J. was creative in funding it as well as facilitating Phase II of the space rollout, which now includes almost all the company’s space in Illinois.  By integrating Caterpillar’s CISCO VOIP system with ARCHIBUS’ Telecommunications and Cable Management, Caterpillar can now identify the physical location of the E911 call so first responders can reach the location in time.  J. has also worked with Caterpillar Corporate Real Estate to implement Real Property and Lease Management to track Caterpillar’s real estate holdings for much of the US.  J. has consistently identified opportunities to expand the use of ARCHIBUS to meet Caterpillar’s ever changing business needs.
  • Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne: Florent Deseneux
For over 10 years, Florent has promoted the development and integration of ARCHIBUS as the school’s central facilities management system. Beginning with the simple management of drawings, ARCHIBUS now centralizes information on the institution’s approximately 400,000 square meters of space, including data on occupancy, inventories, security badges and other management information. The school recently spun-off its engineering department which has also developed an ARCHIBUS Web-based campus guide for visitors, who can find their location and routes to their destinations via a series of information screens.
  • Hamilton County, Ohio - Department of County Facilities: Michelle Ray
Michelle Ray, CAFM Project Manager, has implemented an innovative approach to managing a public health initiative using ARCHIBUS. In response to the recent H1N1 flu outbreak,  ARCHIBUS was used to track and aid in the distribution of vaccine inventories and other health supplies for three independent Public Health Districts in Southwest Ohio.

  • Santa Clara Valley Health and Hospital System
Santa Clara Valley Health and Hospital System (SCVHHS) have employed ARCHIBUS as their facilities management system of record for over ten years. As early adopters of multiple modules on the desktop?including Space Management, Building Operations Management, Telecommunications and Cable Management and Move Management?they supplemented the legacy platform with a variety of custom employee self-service web applications developed by BRG to expand the application reach to an enterprise level.  A year ago, with the rapidly maturing Web Central suite more readily meeting their needs, SCVHHS worked with BRG to revisit their entire facilities business process and, as a part of this initiative, evaluate their supporting technology. The overall goal was to streamline operations and reduce operating costs related to the services provided to their users. The outcome of this initiative was an optimized set of business processes which incorporates leading industry practices, along with a specification for a comprehensive technology solution to support them.  Because of ARCHIBUS’ end-to end-functionality and flexibility, BRG was able to satisfy the SCVHHS business requirements with minimal customization. The resulting technology-enabled business process redesign has resulted not only in greater efficiency and effectiveness in SCVHHS day-to-day operations, but has also dramatically lowered the cost of supporting their CRE technology platform.
  • Scottrade: Ryan Robertson
Having entered the ARCHIBUS world only 18 months ago, Ryan has been instrumental in the rollout of ARCHIBUS throughout the Scottrade organization. From Branch Development to Lease Management to Space Management to Building Operations, Ryan is able to present the data in a way that is helpful and understandable to all audiences, from the Maintenance Shop to the Office of the CEO.
